Peter Kanarian Obituary

Peter Kanarian, 92, of Barrington, passed away peacefully at The Miriam Hospital surrounded by his family. He was the beloved husband of Brenda Kanarian; they were married for 37 years.

He was born in Pawtucket, RI, the youngest of three children.  His brother Norire Kanarian and his wife Armenouhi, and sister Anne Kazanjian and her husband Herach predeceased him.

After graduating from East Pawtucket High School, he worked at the family’s store, The Avenue Superette.  Soon after, he enlisted in the Army and was stationed in Korea.  Upon his return, he earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Rhode Island College where he found his passion for education and counseling.  His career started as a Social Studies teacher in Pawtucket, followed by becoming a teacher and then a guidance counselor in Barrington. He helped thousands of students navigate their course selections and plans after graduation.  Over the years, many of his former students have reached out and thanked him for his advice and support.

After retiring, he combined his passion for cooking and feeding others.  He began volunteering at the soup kitchen in The Cathedral of St. John, Providence.

Later, he founded St. John’s Mobile Meals, in Barrington which provides meals to those in need.

In addition to taking care of others,  he also took care of himself.  He loved golfing in both Barrington and Naples, Florida, beach walks and traveling with Brenda, gardening, and exercising.

Pete embraced every role within his family and had many names: Dad, Pete, PK, Pops, and Poppy.

He is survived by his children:  Steven Kanarian and his late wife Moira, Susan Goulet and her husband John, Elizabeth Vetromile and her husband Robert, Peter Robinson and his wife Gail; his grandchildren Leah, Alicia, Alex, Theresa, Michael, Sam, Ali, Hope, Noelle, Nate and Jack; and great-grandchildren Kennedy, Kollyns and Asher.

Pete will always be remembered as a thoughtful and compassionate man with a wonderful sense of humor. He had many lasting relationships and saw the true value in people.
