80, a resident of Barrington since 1972, died from complications of Parkinson’s disease. Betty was a loving wife, mother, and caretaker of her many animal friends. She enjoyed working at the Barrington Public Library locating books for patrons in the interlibrary loan system and less so providing secretarial service for her husband’s patent practice.
She is predeceased by her son Ian Ross Doherty, 20, and survived by her husband of 55 years Robert, her daughter Nancy Doherty of Hartford, CT, and her son Owen Roberts, and Betty’s son Neal Doherty of Charlotte, NC his wife Carol and their children Rowan, Reese, and Charlie. Betty is also survived by her loving sister Jane Arees of Sudbury, MA.
When the family moved to a former 6 acre sheep farm off George Street in 1986 Betty saw herself as a landscape architect in the mode of Capability Brown, the 18th century English gardener. Capability Betty pitched in to select and site a new house on the property and oversee plantings to transform the area from farm to estate.
Summers at the cape were a must for Betty either at her family’s compound in West Dennis and later at their retirement home in Cummaquid purchased just prior to her Parkinson’s diagnosis. Burial will be at a later date at Milton Cemetery, Milton, MA. Donations to Visiting Nurses Home and Hospice, Portsmouth, RI would be appreciated.
