Eleanor M. (Scribner) Marco

Eleanor M. Marco (Scribner), 93 of Riverside and Johnson’s Pond, Coventry RI, passed away Friday, May 31, at the Riverview Health Center in Coventry.   Eleanor was the widow of the late James J. Marco and is survived by her two children JoAnn E. Johnson of Foster and Robert S. Marco and his wife, Kathy, of West Warwick.    She is also survived by her 6 grandchildren: Matthew P. Johnson (Noelle), Melanie J. Johnson, Meredith J. French (Joseph), Adrienne E. Johnson-Lister (Cameron), Anthony R. Marco and Joshua J. Marco.   She was the great grandmother of Andrew Long, Tyler and Kaitlyn Johnson, Mackenzie and Gwyneth French, Anthony R. Marco, Jr. (AJ), and Piper E. Johnson-Lister.

Eleanor and her parents, R. Joseph and Dorothy M. (Colbert) Scribner, moved to Narraganset Avenue, Riverside from Willimantic Connecticut in the early 1930s.  She married Jim Marco in 1947 and moved to Providence where they resided until 1973.

For the next 35 years Eleanor and Jim worked together every day. During that time, she was most proud of their commitment to improve the lives of abandoned, sick and neglected animals while Jim was superintendent of the Providence Animal Rescue League.  From 1973 – 1988, she worked at Speidel in Final Inspection.  Eleanor and Jim retired in 1983 and began the next phase of their lives together.

Eleanor always looked forward to June 15 every year as the official opening of the “summer house” on Johnson’s Pond in Coventry.  A popular gathering place for four generations of family and friends since 1956, she especially enjoyed their annual 4th of July parties that included home-made chowder and clam cakes and evening fireworks.  In her later years she would sit in her rocker on the waterfront deck, watch the activities on the pond and welcome old friends and new.

Eleanor’s family greatly appreciates the loving care shown to her by the committed and thoughtful staff of both the Riverview Health Community and Hope Health Hospice & Palliative Care.

Calling hours are on Thursday, June 6, from 5-7 p.m. and June 7 at 10:00 a.m. from Smith-Mason Funeral Home, 398 Willet Avenue, Riverside.  Burial will be in St. Ann’s Cemetery, Cranston at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers donations to Hope Health Hospice & Palliative Care, 1085 North Main Street, Providence, 02904 would be appreciated.
