Professor Stanley Zimmering

Stanley Zimmering, 94, a 55 year resident of Barrington, RI, passed away at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center on Monday, April 23, 2018. Born on April 14, 1924 in Brooklyn, NY, he attended Brooklyn College and then earned a Ph.D. in Biology at the University of Missouri.  After holding several research and teaching positions at universities in the East and Midwest he joined the faculty of Brown University where, as a professor in the Biological and Medical Sciences Division, he taught and did research in genetics for almost 40 years. During that time he published over 100 scientific papers. He was an avid fan of the Brown hockey team, holding season tickets for over 50 years. Intrigued with singing since youth, in his 70’s he joined the Narragansett Bay Chorus, Providence Chapter of the Barbershop Honorary Society, with whom he continued to perform at the age of 93. His wife of 46 years, Dorothy Davis Zimmering, passed away in 1998 and their second born, Jonathan Marc, predeceased them in 1986. Professor Zimmering is survived by a daughter, Joslyn Buchanan and husband, Robert, of New Mexico, a son Paul Zimmering, MD and wife, Betsey, of Connecticut, grandchildren Josh Zimmering and wife, Catherine, of Oklahoma, and Stephanie Zimmering Schiff and husband, Steven, of New Jersey, and great-grandsons Cameron Zimmering and Elijah Schiff.  Burial will be in a private ceremony on Saturday, April 28.
